Suspect charged with construction worker death, LMPD officer shot dead on I-264

A man accused of fatally shot and killed a construction worker and wounded an LMPD officer on an interstate of the Louisville metro was charged with the murder of a police officer, the Commonwealth Prosecutor said in a statement. Stewart was jailed last week, days after the November 19th double shooting on I-264 in Shively. Louisville Metro police investigators said the 25-year-old walked onto the interstate near the Dixie Highway flyover and shot Fred O’Bannon in his work truck. The Jefferson County Grand Jury has tried Keyshaun Joseph Canard Stewart on charges of murder, first degree assault charges and criminal attempted murder of a police officer, the Commonwealth Prosecutor said in a statement.

Stewart was jailed last week, days after the November 19th double shooting on I-264 in Shively. Louisville Metro police investigators said the 25-year-old made his way to the interstate near the Dixie Highway flyover and shot Fred O’Bannon in his work car.

O’Bannon died on the scene, police said.

Investigators then said that Stewart had the gun pointed at another worker before setting fire to Sgt. James Chris Lane. The officer was shot in the face but was still able to track Stewart and shoot the suspect twice, investigators said.

Both Lane and Stewart were hospitalized.

When Stewart left the hospital, he was sent to jail. He is due to be formally indicted on December 6th.
