Sir David Adjaye receives the first Charlotte Perriand Award
Architect Sir David Adjaye is announced as the winner of the Charlotte Perriand Award 2022, the Créateurs Design Awards first prize for design pioneers
Architect Sir David Adjaye has been announced as the recipient of the 2022 Charlotte Perriand Award. The award, which is part of the annual Créateurs Design Awards series (which includes categories such as Best Residential Project, Best Commercial Project and Best Product Design), is the first of its kind in which Adjaye takes first prize for pioneering designers – exactly like legendary French creative Charlotte Perriand.
The new Charlotte Perriand Award was created in memory of the famous French architect and designer. “This is the first time the Perriand family has allowed their name to be used beyond their immediate work,” the organizers point out, while Perriand’s daughter, Pernette Perriand-Barsac, celebrates Adjaye’s win: “As I read [Adjaye’s] Words in the press or his approach that he describes on social networks, I see how great [his and my mother’s] Proximity is, to the point that real dialogue takes place across time.’

Says Adjaye: ‘[Charlotte Perriand] was really farsighted in his thinking about what the profession could be and understood the role of designers in their responsibility to make the 21st century beautiful, empowering and uplifting [as possible] for people of all races – and for the thriving of our human civilization.” Adjaye Associates’ recent projects include the Cherry Groce Memorial Pavilion in Brixton, London and 130 William in New York, while an extensive list of forthcoming projects includes works such as the Africa Institute included in Sharjah.
Ghanaian-British architect Adjaye is widely celebrated in his industry and beyond, having received a range of honours, from his knighthood in 2017 to the Royal Gold Medal in 2021 (he was the first black architect to receive it). Contributing to a better society and effecting positive change through design excellence are goals that are part of Adjaye’s practice – and values shared by Perriand, making this award a fitting recognition of the celebrated architect’s significant work. §
