“Culture is the whole reason why we want to be architects”say Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee in this short film directed by Wildfang. The 3-minute film is the first in a series entitled “Sight Specific” in which artists and architects talk about their creative process and share personal stories.

in this first profile, the founders of LA-based architecture firm johnston marklee discuss the difference between Arts and architecturethe “casual decision” to open their office and how the small buildings they tackle are like rooms in the city. “It’s a quiet thing, but I think it’s profound”, notes Sharon Johnston. the film takes viewers through the johnston marklee studio and on location to previous work, which they explore and experience through a new lens.

Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee first met as students at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (GSD). In 1998 the couple then founded johnston marklee in los angeles. The award-winning architecture firm has a diverse portfolio of projects of various sizes and typologies, spanning 14 countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia.

johnston marklee’s work is visually stunning with a carefully considered aesthetic and her approach is rigorous yet open and experimental. although the studio is based in los angeles, their work and perspectives are heavily influenced by their travel time for projects and teaching, giving them a multidimensional perspective.
