Police in Chivhu have arrested two men who belonged to a gang that ambushed a road construction company along the Masvingo-Harare highway and stole 350 liters of diesel.

The suspects were arrested in a film-style chase that resulted in their vehicle being dropped and chasing after them.

But nimble-footed policemen passed them and arrested them.

Mashonaland East Provincial Police Spokesman Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the arrests, adding that a manhunt for the other three has now been started.

Police said a guard was on duty at around 6 p.m. on September 10, manning road equipment from the Fossil Construction Company along the 123 km stretch of the Harare-Masvingo Highway.

At around 2 a.m., a white, unregistered Mazda Bongo stopped about 20 meters from the company base on a detour and asked the guard to look.

When he got to the vehicle, his driver sped off in the direction of Harare.

The guard then heard a loud bang at the base and hurried back to check. When he arrived at the scene, he was hit on the forehead with a metal object. The guard found there were four other suspects on the scene.

The security guard was further attacked and they fled the scene before hiding on a nearby farm.

The guard returned around 5 a.m. and found the lids of diesel tanks from two steel roller machines and an excavator opening.

He also discovered that diesel had gotten to the ground from the machines.

A complaint was made at the Feathrestone Police Station.

After an hour, the police who were occupying a roadblock in Beatrice tried to intercept an overloaded Nissan caravan.

They stopped the vehicle, but it didn’t stop, resulting in a rapid chase towards Harare.

The police officers then alerted their colleagues who were occupying a roadblock at the 20 km stake.

It is reported that the suspects were stopped at the 20 km long stake and escaped on foot. The police started the chase and arrested one of the suspects, Prosper Hipandambira, 46.

The police filled 27x20l containers with diesel and recovered two small pipes.

Hipandambira involved Robson Mudzonga (32) from Dzivarasekwa in Harare. The detectives found that at the Fossil Construction Site near Njiva stores in Chivhu, the gang also stole 350 liters of diesel and 2 x 48 kg of gasoline tanks.

“The police are asking for clues that could lead to the arrest of the three suspects who are still at large. They are known for their Pseudonyms as Edward von Epworth and Bonnie von Dzivarasekwa Extension, ”said Chazovachii.
