According to a spokesman for the project, construction of an eight-story condo along Grand Avenue is expected to be completed by mid-summer, with owners of the third- and fourth-story units taking ownership in June.
All 36 condos in the development are pre-sold.
The development will be built on land that previously housed the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Harry Bookey and Pamela Bass-Bookey, owners of real estate investment firm BH Equities, purchased the property in August 2020.
Part of the church built in 1931 was demolished. The remaining part will be converted into a large club room, a café lounge for residents, a fitness center and suites for overnight guests. A swimming pool, sun deck and green area for dogs are also planned.
Construction of the condominium project was originally scheduled to begin in early 2020. However, the pandemic prompted some condo buyers to back out of their purchase contracts, information to the Des Moines City Council in the summer of 2020 showed material costs were rising, taking the project cost from $37.4 million to nearly $40 million.
According to BH Equities spokesperson, approximately 75% of the construction work is complete.
Many of the original lighting fixtures from the church have been salvaged and restored and will be reused, according to the spokesman. The church’s original spire was saved and will be placed as a sculpture in a green space across from Grand Avenue.
