Two construction workers were killed and three others were injured, including one life-threatening when a pile of marble slabs fell on them while a truck was being unloaded on the construction site of the new District Secretariat building in the city of Una. The seriously injured worker was referred to the PGI Chandigarh. The deceased were identified as Mohan and Shiva, both natives of Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred around 1 p.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the workers unloaded marble slabs from the truck. By shifting weight, the tires of the truck suddenly sank into the sand on one side, the vehicle overturned and marble slabs fell over the workers. Two injured workers were pronounced dead at Una District Hospital while another was released after first aid.
When they heard the screams of the injured workers, their colleagues and local residents rushed to rescue them. Work on the six-story building of the secretariat has been in full swing for a year and a half, and marble slabs have been brought in for the interior fittings of a construction company.
The chairman of the state finance commission, Satpal Singh Satti, as well as police and administrative officials rushed to the construction site to oversee the rescue operations. Rajesh Kumar, PWD’s executive engineer, said an investigation into the incident was ongoing. The police have recorded a case and are investigating.
