Foundation work is nearing completion for the Fashion Institute of Technology’s New Academic Building, a ten-story building in Chelsea’s Garment District. Designed by SHoP Architects, the structure will span 110,000 square feet. EE Cruz & Company Inc. is the general contractor for the project, which is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, within walking distance of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and the Moynihan Train Hall. The developer is aiming for LEED Gold certification.
As of our last update in late October, the concrete foundation has been fully formed and only a small portion of the walls at the northernmost corner await completion while workers are tying steel rebar at the time of our visit. We expect the inner core section and pillars to begin in the coming weeks. Given the scale of the superstructure, construction should likely be completed before the end of the year.
It was last reported that the New Academic Building would feature a large multi-story glass curtain wall along the main north facade overlooking West 28th Street. The central part of the building will have the highest floor height and will be surrounded by a much more transparent shell. The remaining glass surfaces at the top and bottom appear to be more reflective and are interspersed with decorative bronze slats that run the full height of the structure. The east and west sides are depicted as blank walls covered with earth-toned panels.
Below is an interior rendering of the student lounge area. The New Academic Building will also include classrooms, administrative offices, meeting and exhibition spaces, and a skylight-lit student quadrangle.
As noted on site, the New Academic Building is scheduled for completion in spring 2023.
