CBI officers arrested an NHAI officer and three executives from a construction company working on the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project in connection with a bribery incident and confiscated Rs 4 crore during searches.
In an official statement, the Prime Minister said that Akil Ahmad, the arrested regional official for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has a habit of soliciting and accepting illegal rewards from contractors to settle outstanding bills and preliminary commercial operations dates (PCOD) for completed projects.
Ahmad has allegedly sought illegal satisfaction from Bengaluru-based General Manager Retnakaran Sajilal of Bhopal-based Dilip Buildcon Limited, which has been tasked with executing projects under the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway Packages 1 and 2.
Retnakaran was among the company officials arrested in the case, while others include Managing Director Devendra Jain, Deputy General Manager Mahim Pratap Singh Tomar and employee Sunil Kumar Verma. One of the private individuals arrested in the case is named Anuj Gupta.
It was further alleged that Rs 20 lakh should be delivered to a private person in Delhi on behalf of the NHAI officer. The CBI set a trap and captured the private individual and an employee of Dilip Buildcon Limited. CBI officials restored the bribe.
Officials raided the defendants’ premises in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, Gurugram, Bhopal and other locations. While Rs 4 crore was seized from the private individual, Rs 4 lakh was seized from the NHAI officer’s premises.
The CBI had registered the case against the defendants. It will seek her custody of the court to question her.
