Bureau Probets unveils design for Dubai pavilion

Australia’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, designed by the Proberts office from Brisbane, will create a stylized representation of the country’s unique landscape and dramatic sky.

Inspired by historical landscape paintings, Bureau Probets designed a cloud-like shape that will float over a foldable wooden site. “We have been very pleased with translating the essence of Australia – or its qualitative elements – into a built form,” said Liam Proberts, Managing and Creative Director of Bureau Proberts.

“It was interesting to see cumulus clouds appear in scenes of the Australian countryside throughout history. Not only is the cumulus cloud instantly recognizable in the Australian skyline, it is ubiquitous all over the world.

“Just as a real cloud is made up of a series of droplets, our cloud structure is made up of countless different but similar elements.

“Together they mean the way Australia is home to multiple cultures that unite and improve our nation.”

The “cloud” canopy is attached with a series of lights that create a dynamic display that resembles a flash from an Australian thunderstorm.

Below that, the site will consist of cross-laminated timber that is sustainably extracted and can be dismantled and reused.

“Protected by a spacious, cloud-like shape, we have created a large, open meeting room in the heart of the pavilion,” continues Proberts. “It offers a welcoming invitation to all visitors and reflects the warm and inclusive nature of Australians.”

A VIP facility on a balcony on the second floor will overlook the pavilion’s courtyard.

The pavilion is used for Australia’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, which will take place from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
