When you look at your listing, you may find that certain items don’t have a fixed price. Instead, you are given up to a certain amount of money that you can spend on it. For example, instead of giving a specific price for kitchen cabinets, you might be told that you can spend up to $ 20,000 on cabinets. 1. More allowances mean a greater chance of going over budget
The biggest problem with allowances is that they make it really difficult to get an accurate estimate of the true cost of your finished home.
Just because your builder is giving you up to a certain amount of money for a particular item doesn’t mean you are actually able to stay within that limit. It may turn out to be a need to subtract $ 40,000 from your bank account for the kitchen of your dreams, for example. How to minimize allowances
Rather than making many decisions during the construction process, capture as much detail as possible when you receive your quote. Then make sure your building proposal includes the items you selected.
This approach takes more time up front, but you have to make all of these decisions anyway. You can also do this early on to avoid budget surprises later on and ensure you get a quote that shows which builder is really building the cheapest home.
