Anakapalle Flyover Collapse: 2 dead as concrete beams of the overpass under construction in Vizag collapse | Visakhapatnam news


VISAKHAPATNAM: Two people died on the spot and three others were injured after two concrete beams collapsed on an overpass under construction in the city of Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred on the Anandapuram-Anakapalle route near the Puppala intersection.
The overpass is being built as part of the six-lane project by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which had commissioned a private construction company with the work.
The accident resulted in massive traffic jams on the route, which was characterized by strong vehicle movements.
Deputy Police Commissioner K Sravani said the concrete structure of the overpass collapsed onto a car and a tanker truck.
Two people who were in the front seat of the car died in the incident, while the other two who were in the back seat of the vehicle were rescued.
A person in the tank truck was also rescued by the police, she added.
The deceased were identified as Satish Kumar and Sushanth Mohanty, both residents of Sriharipuram in the city of Vizag.
The police have transferred the injured to the nearby hospital, where their condition is said to be stable.
Heice said that Kumar and Mohanty, along with their wives, came to the city of Anakapalle for darshan from a local deity. The incident happened when they were returning home.
The police suspect that a mechanical defect caused the concrete beams to collapse.
On charges of poor construction quality, members of the CPM called for a detailed investigation into the incident.
District Secretary of CPM K Lokanadham demanded that the government provide the families of the deceased with 1 billion rupees free of charge and that the injured should receive extended treatment.
