The Applewood Manor
With towering resorts on exclusive beaches and luxurious boutiques in metropolises, classic bed & breakfasts can fall by the wayside. However, Applewood Manor, built in 1912, is a powerful reminder that B & Bs are alive and well. There’s something undeniably cute about a five-bedroom space (plus a separate cottage) that feels more like an elegant private residence than a hotel, and Ashville’s The Applewood Manor is no exception.
The surrounding cherry, oak, pine and maple trees and the Blue Ridge Mountains inform every corner of the highly decorated interiors, all of which are furnished with Regency-style antiques from 1stDibs. Since the property used to be the home of the original owner (until his death in 1939), the mansion looks and feels like a private home. The main level includes a large entrance hall that extends to the rear of the house, a colorful living room with multiple fireplaces, living room, formal dining room, pantry, half bath, and kitchen. Four of the guest rooms, each styled in the style of their unique names (Granny Smith, Northern Spy, York Imperial, and MacIntosh), are located on the second floor of the mansion. The last guest room, the spacious Winesap suite, takes up the entire third floor.
Snake River Sports Club
Spanning nearly 1,000 acres, some of which form a fully functioning ranch, the Snake River Sporting Club in Jackson Hole is like a transcendent threshold to an extremely harsh oasis. When it comes to sleeping quarters, there is no wrong choice between the three rustic, multi-room cottages: the Shooting Cabin is a wooded jewel case spanning more than 31 acres, the four-bedroom Fairway Lodge has 20-foot vaulted ceilings in the open plan living room, and the Caddis Lodge offers breathtaking views of the Snake River Canyon. There is also plenty to do in the club: clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, golf, mountain biking, archery, platform tennis and hiking. From the bridle paths and serene pastures to the nearby granite mountains and rivers, the Snake River Sporting Club is a gentle reminder that the Old West has gone nowhere and is as popular as ever.
